Serenity Bumped To Fall
Joss Whedon posted on the Whedonesque Web site that the film`s release has
been pushed back to Sept. 30, 2005, from its original April 22
opening.Whedon told fans, "See, sometimes studios shuffle around release
dates. So what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded
with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio
[Universal Pictures] decided September was a clearer corridor for the film
to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence
in the film. In fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now
they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to,
they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign, since
there's not a single finished effect in the film. There's no reworking the
end, no reshoots, no 'does it have to be in space?' It's just a marketing
issue. Now you'll get to watch lots of trailers in the summer. And
hopefully, by the time it comes out, other people, people who ain't us, will
get a whiff of what we're up to and come along, too. I love this movie. I
HATE waiting to show it too you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're
feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing,
and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a
grownup. The release date is Sept. 30. Hopefully it won't change again."

Ten bucks says it never makes it into theaters. Wait, never is a long
time; I'd never see your cash. Let's see, Whedon is saying September
2005 now? How's a deadline of September 30 2006 or Video sound to you?

Sounds good. I'll even grant you that it must appear with a wide
distribution, rather than just a handful of art-house theaters in
certain cities.

Is it a bet?

My, are we a bundle of positiveness!

To amplify on another response to this thread, no matter what happens, we
get more Firefly!

Seriously, I think this movie will make it to the big screen and I think it
will do well. I would be very pleased if it was a runaway hit, but even
that is possible given good positioning for release and some trailer time/TV
advertising

I was concerned about the chosen release date given that Star Wars III would
most certainly erode ticket sales -- even with the power of word-of-mouth
marketing on Serenity's side.

Universal can't control when other studios release their movies. They can
only position their opening dates and, as necessary and feasible, adjust the
release date to their motion picture's advantage.

Like I said, whatever happens, it's MORE Firefly for us! I can wait.

I wonder how many original Star Wars fans (Ep. 4. 5, & 6)
are not going to bother going to see Star Wars Ep. III (or
even rent it when it comes out on DVD), because of how *bad*

It's a car wreck. You have to see it, regardless, simply to get the
closure in your life, to say you've done it. It's collector's
mentality. No matter if you thought that the first two sucked majorly
(and they did), you have to slow down and look at this last one, even if
it's just using your bargain passes at a matinee.

I was banking on seeing Serenity at about the same time to lessen the
pain. Now, all hope is lost. There is no longer another.

On the plus side, it will have Natalie Portman in it, even if Lucas has
squeezed all signs of life out of her acting.

Comments along the lines of "now if he could just squeeze her out of her
costume" start coming to mind. But the whole situation is just too sad even
for that.

That's not quite true. Ep1 had all manner of Imperiana from McDiarmid ("I
don't want this stunted slime in my sight again" - "I will -make- it
legal" - "Wipe... them... out. ALL of them") But I'll grant that Ep2 was
instantly forgettable.

There's also the nitpick-ability, like how they are going to warp things
together to make them fit with 4,5,6. We who will go (I have no life, I

I was banking on seeing Serenity at about the same time to lessen the
pain [of "Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith"]. Now, all
hope is lost. There is no longer another.
Well, the long-delayed "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" movie is
scheduled for 6 May 2005. The entries in the website's News blog are
quite reassuring as to the integrity of the script. It's not the same
as the novels but then, *none* of the incarnations of the story have
been the same.

http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/

Also, LEGO stop-motion filmmakers will no doubt be producing "Star
Wars," parodies shortly thereafter, using whatever new sets LEGO
provides. (There have been some pictures leaked.) They've already
(in 2002) produced trailers for Ep III that are probably better than
what we'll get.

http://www.brickfilms.com

(I'll be showing a compilation of SF/F LEGO films at Philcon this
year. Philcon, the world's first SF convention, since 1937. 10-12
December 2004. www.philcon.org.)

Hmmm, a LEGO replica of _Serenity_? That'd be tricky.

Let me put it this way: it was fun series and enjoyed every single
movie in the series.

But then I wasn't the only. Thousands of us waited in line opening
day. Little did I know that day how good the movie and the series
would be. (BTW, the movie house I saw it at is now gone.)

My experience also. It was also my first job, and I watched the movie in
pieces about 17 times before I saw the whole thing. And that little
theatre is gone, too. I saw Ep 4 about 1000 times and ep 1 only 2 or 3. I
will go to 3 but I can't even remember what #2 was about.

I wonder how many original Star Wars
fans (Ep. 4. 5, & 6) are not going to bother
going to see Star Wars Ep. III (or even
rent it when it comes out on DVD),
because of how *bad* Eps. I and II were.

It was well worth missing.

I was bound and determined not to see it. I ended up seeing it on HBO
when it followed something I watched, and I left it on while I was
cleaning up the mess in my living room.

It was ghastly beyond belief. The only positive thing I could say
about it is that Christopher Lee managed to get through it with his
dignity intact. And I suspect that the only reason he was able to do
so was that he's made a virtual career out of giving dignified
performances in excreble films.

Man, he played a character named "Dooku"! How is that dignified?

My short list of positives would dwell mostly on a handful of truly
beautiful and spectacular special effects. Special effects cannot make
for a good film, but there's some stuff in AotC which stands as a
visual triumph quite separate from its inclusion in a piss-poor movie.

My suspicion is that he calculated that everyone had just seen Saruman in
"Fellowship" and would see him again in "Towers", which would make everyone
forget all about his appearance in that year's steaming Lucas dropping. And
you know, he was right. On that dark day when he passes this Earth, and may
it not come for years, we who've barely seen him in a movie before LotR will
be flooding the streets with their tears.

Fantastic. I was hoping the well-known Usenet dimensional flux would
eventually align with one of those all-too-rare dimensions where Lucas
is still capable of producing great stuff (or, at the very least,
listens to a skilled editor). Quickly, before the trans-dimensional
flux unsynchs, e-mail me a copy of your universe's version of TPM and

There *is* "The Phantom Edit", somewhere. Also, personally I use two books
as alternatives to the movies: "Cloak of Deception" for TPM and
"Shatterpoint" for AotC. FWIW. (By the way - just try reading the latter
without hearing Samuel L Jackson throwing out the signature lines. Whoo! I
so wish they'd filmed that one instead.)

As is the case with most sequels for any film, anything after the

Lucas.

What about Portman? All I know about her is that she *can* act, based on
other Portman movies I've seen, but she decided not to bother during the Ep2
shooting. MacGregor, McDiarmid, and especially Christensen all stepped up
and did the best with what they were given. So did Fisher and Co. back in
the day. I'm dreading the hash she'll make of Ep3.

Few. Those movies did well. I saw II twice, even though not liking it
very much. It had several strong scenes, even if the overall script was
poor.

It didn't get a wide release in the US, though it did very well in the
UK. It's just out on video over here (or will be soon), and is expected
to be pretty popular.

Two words: "Naked Gun".

The way the "Firefly" movie is promoted, will matter a lot. The quality
of the actual movie, will matter some. The prior television history, will
matter not at all unless it figures strongly in the promotion.

Lots of ways this project could fail, but this probably isn't one of them.

How the FUCK does that have anything to do with ANYTHING? Perhaps you
no speak english. Compare: To consider or describe as similar, equal,

Comprehension is real important in the definition of "to read" (To

I don"t see alt.fucking.retard as one of the groups in this cross
posting. Do you even KNOW where you are? Perhaps your Mommie could tell
you. When she's finished with "Uncle John."
If I knew where you were coming from, I WOULD. No need to consider an
"or not," believe me.
You would probably be more coherent on heavy drugs. Did you stop taking
your medications recently?
You might want to do something about that vein in your temple. Looks like
it's about to pop.

How the FUCK does that have anything to do with ANYTHING? Perhaps you
no speak english. Compare: To consider or describe as similar, equal,
or analogous; liken. Now try REAL hard, and try to comprehend (To take
in the meaning, nature, or importance of; grasp) that the statement of
saying that two movies being released within a certain TIME PERIOD of
each other DOES NOT COMPARE them in any way, other than they are BOTH
MOVIES. Of course, you HAVE answered my question on if you can read.

That's why I love Mutant Enemy shows, y'know, the snappy repartee.

It'll wind up going direct to video, mark my words.
Sorry, I'm still marking your "they're dumping it in theaters as
quickly as possible before Star Wars comes out" words from a few
months ago. Care to try for one out of three? :-)
I don't remember ever comparing Firefly to Star Wars in any manner.
Do you have a message ID handy?
I was thinking of this thread:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=mf1qc0p8mj7kh4463ldf3qitorvk3uorr8%404ax.com

...though the comparison to Wing Commander's pre-Ep-1 release in that
thread was actually by SmkMirrors rather than you. Your comment was that
the film would be out on DVD by July... so like I said, one out of three?

Cheers,

With the re-scheduling of the movie my prediction of a video release in
July of 2005 is clearly wrong. Joss has pulled the rug out from under
that one, tricky fellow that he is.

I'm now predicting the movie will never see theater release at all, but
go straight to video. Budget cuts will probably eliminate the cow
pattie bonus, however.
